Born and raised in Beijing, Wu "Jennifer" Yue only applied for a U.S. green card shortly after her first stateside tournament in 2008. She was approved in 2010. Shortly afterward, Wu moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey, took English as a second language classes in New York and trained constantly to play in the Olympics. Influenced by her mother, Wu began playing table tennis at 7 years old. Because Wu played video games for hours at a time, her mother thought table tennis would benefit Wu’s eyesight. By winning gold in women’s singles at the 2015 Pan American Games, Wu became the first American to qualify for the table tennis competition at the Rio Olympics.
