Born in Yasothorn, Thailand, Ratchanok Intanton moved to Bangkok at 3 months old. The owner of the factory where Intanton’s parents worked suggested the young child play badminton at nearby courts, worried Intanton would be burned by boiling water. Intanton began playing at 6 years old and won her first championship at 7; she used her earnings to support her family. Intanton eventually made her international debut as a junior player in 2006, and in 2009, was awarded the Most Promising Player of the Year Eddie Choong Trophy by the Badminton World Federation. She competed at London 2012, but lost in the quarterfinals.
