A competitive swimmer from the age of 9 through her senior year at Whitman College, Mara Abbott started cycling as a way to occupy during swimming’s offseasons. In no time, Abbott proved to be an adept cyclist as she won a Division II national title in her first season. In 2010, Abbott became the first American to win the Giro Donne – an 8-10 day trek through the Italian countryside – the only grand tour in women’s professional cycling. Abbott repeated the feat in 2013, winning the Giro Rosa, rebranded from the Giro Donne that same year, and finished second ion 2015.
