Farah Ann Abdul Hadi
Farah Ann Abdul Hadi of Malaysia collected medals in all six events of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, with golds in the team competition and on floor, silver in the all-around, and bronzes on vault, uneven bars and balance beam. But she received more attention for her attire than her performance: Malaysian religious leaders argued that as a Muslim woman Hadi is forbidden to wear a form-revealing leotard, which is standard in the sport of gymnastics. As the story spread, many came to Hadi’s defense. The Malaysian Minister for Youth and Sports said on Twitter, “In gymnastics Farah wowed the judges and brought home gold. In her deeds only the Almighty judges her. Not you. Leave our athletes alone.” The 22-two-year old said she would not let criticism affect her gymnastics goals or training.
