Born and raised in Huelva, Spain, Carolina Marin began playing badminton in 2001 when her best friend invited her to try a new sport. Though she competed at the London 2012 Olympics, Marin lost in the preliminary stages. By 2014, she had won the World Championships in women’s singles, a feat she repeated the following year. (Her 2014 victory helped Marin win Spanish Sportswoman of the Year.) Marin spent the second half of 2015 ranked as the world no. 1 singles player. Her goals include winning a medal at the Olympics.
