Biography

In 2012, Alexa Scimeca Knierim was looking to reboot her pairs skating career following a split from her first partner. She planned to move from Connecticut to Colorado Springs while looking for a new male skater to team up with—and a week before her cross-country move, received a call from her coach saying she’d found the perfect partner. Then just Alexa Scimeca, she and Chris Knierim instantly connected on and off the ice, and in their first season together claimed a silver medal at the 2013 U.S. Championships. The next year, they hoped to earn one of two spots on the U.S. Olympic team, but missed out on the Sochi Olympics due to their fourth place finish at the 2014 U.S. Championships. They rebounded from the disappointment with a renewed focus on their training and their engagement.

The 2014-15 season was their most successful yet, seeing them qualify for the Grand Prix Final (the first U.S. pairs team to do so since 2007), win their first national title, and finish seventh at the 2015 World Championships. The next season, they earned a silver at nationals and picked up a silver medal at the Four Continents Championships. They got married on June 26, 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colo. But a painful medical ailment forced Scimeca Knierim to undergo stomach surgery a few months after her wedding, and the pair missed almost all of the 2016-17 season’s competitions. They successfully petitioned for a place on the world championships team despite missing nationals and promised they were ready to return to competitive ice. They finished sixth at Four Continents, their first competition back, and finished 10th at Worlds.

The Knierims started their Olympic season by winning the U.S. International Classic in September. Then, they finished fifth at both of their Grand Prix assignments in Japan and the U.S. They recaptured the U.S. national title – their first as a married couple – in January, and were named the sole U.S. pair on the Olympic team.
