Biography

Japan's Ayumu Hirano began making waves in the snowboarding world before he was a teenager. Even at such a young age, one thing about his riding stood out above all else — his amplitude.

It wasn't long before Hirano began delivering on his potential. A silver medal at the 2013 X Games was a breakthrough moment in his career, making him the youngest athlete (at the time) to earn a Winter X Games medal.

A year later, Hirano was making history on an even bigger stage. When he won silver at the 2014 Sochi Games — beating a list of talented riders that included reigning back-to-back champion Shaun White — 15-year-old Hirano became the youngest Olympic medalist in the history of snowboarding by more than three years.

In 2016, Hirano won the Laax Open and X Games Oslo. With big airs that put him nearly on par with White, Hirano is likely to remain a consistent medal threat for years to come.

Hirano's father owns a skate park in the coastal Japanese city of Murakami, and Hirano himself is a fervent skateboarder.
