French-born Bruno Massot switched from singles to pairs skating in his late teens, and competed with Russian-born Daria Popova for several years in hopes of qualifying for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. They succeeded by placing second at the French Championships, but because Popova did not receive French citizenship in time they were denied the Olympic berth. After that disappointment, Massot opted to dissolve his partnership with Popova and team with Germany’s Aliona Savchenko, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist who competed at four straight Olympics from 2002 to 2014. Savchenko gave up her Ukrainian citizen to represent Germany with her former partner, and eventually Massot was also released from the French figure skating federation to skate for Germany as well. The new pair claimed a bronze medal at their world championship debut in 2016.

They started the 2016-17 strongly by winning gold in both their Grand Prix events, but Savchenko tore a ligament in her right ankle during a November 2016 competition. They had to withdraw from the Grand Prix Final and German championships. Savchenko and Massot returned in fighting form for the 2017 European Championships, where they took their second straight silver. At the 2017 World Championships, they won another silver.

To kick off the 2018 Olympic season, Savchenko and Massot earned silver at a competition in Germany. Then, they came to the Grand Prix series, earning a silver in Canada and a gold in the U.S. Savchenko and Massot won the prestigious Grand Prix Final title together in December. They went on to win the German national title, but withdrew from the European Championships in January to focus on the PyeongChang Olympics.
