After moving to Vancouver Island, winter sports became a passion for Cassie Sharpe's family. Her father became the general manager of Mount Washington, which is where Cassie started learning to ski at age 9. Her brothers, meanwhile, later opted for snowboarding, and one of them (younger brother Darcy) is an Olympic hopeful as well.

Despite struggling to support herself financially at the time, Sharpe worked her way up through regional teams before landing with the Canadian national team in 2014. Since then, she has been on the come-up in women's halfpipe. She won a silver medal at the world championships in 2015, then had a string of solid results — 2nd at Dew Tour, 4th at X Games Aspen, 1st at X Games Oslo — despite competing with a painful stress fracture in her back during the 2015/16 season.

Sharpe recorded another major win in 2017 at the FIS World Cup event in Tignes, an event which featured many of the top skiers expected to vie for medals in PyeongChang.

Progressive tricks such as the cork 900 and switch cork 720 have helped Sharpe stand out from the field. Her other defining attribute is her amplitude. At X Games Aspen 2017, she launched 14 feet, 1 inch out of the halfpipe, tying the event record for biggest hit in a women's freeski halfpipe competition.
