Charle Cournoyer was 22 years old, the youngest member of Team Canada’s short track team, at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. With just a single world championships medal, a gold in the men’s 5000m relay from 2013, on his resume, Cournoyer wasn’t expected to skate onto the podium. But after many of his teammates crashed or underwhelmed in Sochi, Cournoyer claimed a surprise bronze in the 500m race behind Russia’s Viktor Ahn and China’s Wu Dajing. He missed much of the post-Olympic season with a broken right foot and shoulder injuries that required surgery, but returned to win another relay medal, this time silver, at the 2016 World Championships.
