Not a particularly sporty kid, Chris Knierim started skating at age 12 because his mother used to skate. He competed in singles for most of his teens, then decided to try pairs at age 18. He competed with several different partners from 2006 to early 2012. Knierim found his permanent partner when Alexa Scimeca Knierim moved to Colorado Springs. He says there was instant flirting from the time he picked her up from the airport for their tryout. The pair tried disguising their affections from their coach, but she picked up on it right away. The couple was married June 26, 2016 Colorado Springs, Colo. But a painful medical ailment forced Scimeca Knierim to undergo stomach surgery a few months after her wedding, and the pair missed almost all of the 2016-17 season’s competitions. They successfully petitioned for a place on the world championships team despite missing nationals and promised they were ready to return to competitive ice. They finished sixth at Four Continents, their first competition back, and finished 10th at Worlds.

The Knierims started their Olympic season by winning the U.S. International Classic in September. Then, they finished fifth at both of their Grand Prix assignments in Japan and the U.S. They recaptured the U.S. national title – their first as a married couple – in January, and were named the sole U.S. pair on the Olympic team.
