Biography

At the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games, Darya Domracheva reigned supreme. In her second Olympics, Domracheva won gold in the 15km individual, 10km pursuit and 12.5km Mass Start. In the individual event, she crushed her opposition, winning by 1 minute and 15 seconds, despite missing one target out of 20 on the range, which results in a full minute being added to an athlete’s final time. The silver and bronze medalists shot clean and still couldn’t catch Domracheva on the clock.

Her other Olympic medal came in 2010 in Vancouver when she won bronze, also in the 15km individual.

Domracheva was born in Belarus, but moved to Russia as a toddler. She started in biathlon when she was 12, living in the biathlon-crazed Khanty Mansiysk region of Russia. She would spend her summers back in Minsk, and when she was 18, Belarusian coaches saw her and asked if she would compete for her country of birth. Two years later Domracheva made her World Cup debut.

Over her career, Domracheva has put herself on biathlon podiums a total of 71 times.

In 2016, Domracheva wed eight-time Olympic biathlon champion, Norway’s Ole Einar Bjorndalen in a small private ceremony. That October, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter they named Xenia.
