Biography

Were it not for his father, David Wise could have ended up a snowboarder. As a kid, Wise was captivated by the snowboarders he saw going high in the halfpipe and hitting rails in the terrain park. But his father, who was a ski racer in college, insisted that Wise stick with skiing until he had it mastered.

The perfect compromise soon came thanks to the rise of freeskiing, which saw skiers beginning to use the same terrain parks that were once dominated by snowboarders. During ski practice, Wise would frequently disappear to visit the terrain park, where he would sometimes break his expensive racing skis. Eventually, Wise received a pair of twin-tip skis, and from that point on, he became a freeskier.

Now Wise is a father of his own. His wife Alexandra, daughter Nayeli and son Malachi are a fixture at the bottom of the superpipe when Wise competes at a major contest. Despite the rigors of training and a whirlwind schedule that takes him around the world to compete, Wise has found a way to balance that lifestyle with being a family man — a rarity in the world of freeskiing.

Known for impressive amplitude and a big bag of difficult tricks, Wise was a member of the inaugural U.S. Olympic team for freeski halfpipe, bringing home the gold medal from Sochi. He also won three consecutive X Games gold medals from 2012-2014, captured several AFP (Association of Freeskiing Professionals) halfpipe championships, and holds the world record for highest air on a hip jump (14.2 meters/46.5 feet).
