Biography

Dutch speed skater Ireen Wuest’s Olympic career encompasses eight total Olympic medals, four of them gold—just one short of the record for most ever won by an Olympic speed skater. Wuest had a golden debut at the 2006 Torino Olympics, where the 19-year-old won the 3000m race to become the youngest Dutch Olympic champion in Winter Games history. She also claimed a bronze medal in the 1500m in Torino, which she improved upon four years later when she won 1500m gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The 2014 Sochi Olympics turned Wuest from a speed skating star to an Olympic legend: she finished first or second in all five of her events, winning two gold medals (3000m, team pursuit) and three silvers (1000m, 1500m, 5000m). She won more medals than any athlete in any sport at the Sochi Games. Now 31 years old, Wuest remains one of the world’s most dominant speed skaters: in 2017 she won gold for the sixth time at the World Allround Championships, and earned two gold and one silver medal at the World Single Distance Championships.
