Since winning a surprise all-around bronze at the 2007 World Championships, Jade Barbosa of Brazil has long been her country’s top hope to become the first Brazilian female gymnast to win an Olympic medal. She qualified for the all-around and vault finals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but finished 10th and seventh, respectively. Barbosa returned to the medal podium at the 2010 World Championships, winning bronze on vault. Prior to the London Olympics, Barbosa refused to sign the Brazilian team’s mandatory agreement concerning the squad’s uniform and brands, reportedly because it conflicted with one of her sponsorship contracts. As a result, Barbosa was not named to the 2012 Olympic team. Over the next two years, injuries would prevent Barbosa from competing at the world championships, but she returned to Worlds in 2015, helping the Brazilian women to a ninth place finish in team qualifications.
