Biography

Before he ever started wrestling, a young J'Den Cox would spend time in University of Missouri wrestling coach Brian Smith's office. Smith was impressed with the aptitude of Cox, who engrossed himself with reading books while his brothers attended wrestling practices. As a kid, J'Den Cox was involved in multiple sports and activities – everything from football and baseball to playing chess and taking music lessons. But it was wrestling that he loved and excelled at. After winning four Missouri state titles in high school, it was Coach Smith who successfully recruited Cox to the University of Missouri for college wrestling. Cox promptly won the 197-pound NCAA championship in 2014 as a true freshman. Cox won his second NCAA championship in 2016, which qualified him for Olympic Trials. He decided to cut weight to compete down at 86kg (189.5 lbs) at Trials, where he upset top-seed Jake Herbert en route to winning the tournament. Two weeks later, Cox earned gold at an Olympic Games World Qualifying Tournament in Mongolia to punch his ticket to Rio.
