Despite her young age, China's Liu Jiayu has been a force to be reckoned with for an entire decade. The former martial artist was noticed by Chinese sports officials when she was just 11 years old, and she relocated to the winter sports mecca of Harbin to begin training in snowboarding.

But it wasn't until she attended a training camp in Canada two years later (in 2005) that Liu first had the opportunity to ride a halfpipe — all her training up to that point had been on trampolines. Within a few weeks, Liu progressed quickly despite her lack of prior experience and became a formidable rider.

In 2009, Liu won a gold medal at the FIS World Snowboarding Championships and captured the World Cup overall title for halfpipe. At the time though, she hadn't had much experience against the world's top riders, who were competing in other events.

Then at the Vancouver Games, Liu proved she could compete with the best of the best, finishing just off the podium in fourth place as a 17-year-old. She returned to the Olympics in 2014 and placed ninth (two of her Chinese teammates also finished inside the top nine).

Liu scored a major victory in 2015 when she won Dew Tour, topping the likes of Chloe Kim and Kelly Clark amid snowy conditions.
