Marion Lepert was taught by her father to windsurf at 8 years old in a small lagoon in Foster City, California. In 2009, the 14 year old racer won her first national championship in the Formula class, establishing herself as the top youth female. She continued her success in her youth board classes which set herself up nicely for an Olympic board transition in 2013 – the RS:X. Lepert missed the podium by one point at the 2013 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Youth World Championships. In 2015, Lepert decided to train full-time and in order to do so, took a leave of absence from Stanford University – and it was a sacrifice that paid off. She won silver at the U21 European Championships and bronze at the Pan American Games. “Taking time off from school really changed how I sail, because I’m no longer sleeping three hours a night and doing homework at the same time!” Lepert told U.S. Sailing. A come-from-behind performance at the 2016 Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta secured Lepert’s Olympic selection. In the end, she beat out 2012 Olympian Farrah Hall, marking Lepert’s first career Olympic appearance.
