Marrit Leenstra has been an integral member of the Dutch women’s speed skating team in the team pursuit event for nearly every major competition this decade. Since 2011, Leenstra has helped the Dutch women win three gold and two silver medals in the team pursuit at the World Single Distance Championships, plus a team pursuit gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Leenstra has yet to win a world or Olympic medal in an individual event. In hopes of improving her results outside of the team pursuit event, Leenstra moved to Italy in 2016 to train with the Italian national team. She has been married to Matteo Anesi, an Italian speed skater who won team pursuit gold at the 2006 Torino Olympics and is now a coach, since 2014.
