Biography

When Mikaela Mayer first discovered boxing, she was repeatedly told that she was “too old” to have a competitive career in the sport. For a 17-year-old who happened to be making money as a model, that might be enough to dissuade many girls from pursuing any training in such an aggressive combat sport. That wasn’t the case though with Mayer, who withdrew her last $100 from the ATM, signed up for boxing classes and immediately became hooked. In 2012, women’s boxing was added to the Olympic program for the first time ever, and Mayer had aspirations of representing the United States in London. She advanced to the final round of the U.S. Olympic Trials that year but was defeated by Queen Underwood. Four years later, Mayer returned to Olympic Trials, where a potential spot in Rio was on the line. This time, she emerged victorious, securing herself the opportunity to qualify internationally for the Olympics. Mayer lives by a one-word motto: “perseverance.” She is currently pursuing a business degree at Northern Michigan University, where she will return full-time next year to resume her studies.
