A two-time medalist at the world junior championships, Mirai Nagasu’s early career garnered comparisons to Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski. In 2008, Nagasu won gold at the National Championships at age 14—the second-youngest female skater ever to take the U.S. title. Two years later, she punched her ticket to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics with a silver medal performance at that year’s national championships. A relative unknown, Nagasu had never competed at Worlds on the senior level or won medals on the Grand Prix circuit when she made her Olympic debut. The 16-year-old earned a personal best score in the free skate to finish just off the podium in fourth. Leading up to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Nagasu hoped to rebound from a few years of inconsistent results—from a strong third-place finish at the 2011 Four Continents Championship to disappointing seventh-place finishes at the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Championships—to show she was still one of the U.S.’ top ladies skaters. She succeeded, finishing third at the 2014 U.S. Championships, but it wasn’t enough to earn an Olympic berth. Looking at international results in addition to the nationals results, the U.S. figure skating federation controversially decided to place Ashley Wagner, who finished fourth, on the Olympic team instead of Nagasu.

After the disappointment of Sochi, Nagasu switched her training base to Colorado Springs, Colorado to work with coach Tom Zakrajsek. Her results didn’t level out; she was 10th at the 2015 Nationals then fourth in 2016. She claimed a silver medal at the 2016 Four Continents Championships then placed 10th at the world championships soon after. In 2017, she was fourth again at nationals, and earned a bronze medal at the Four Continents Championships to finish off her season.

Nagasu opened her Olympic season with a silver medal at an international competition in Salt Lake City. Then, Nagasu traveled to Russia where she finished ninth at her Grand Prix assignment. She followed that up with a fourth place finish at the Grand Prix event in Japan. At the U.S. Nationals, Nagasu finished second and earned a spot on the Olympic team for 2018.
