One of the all-time great tennis players and a member of the “Big Four”, Spain’s Rafael Nadal has won 14 Grand Slam singles titles, the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles, and helped Spain earn the Davis Cup in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011. A career Grand Slam winner by age 24, Nadal is known as “the King of Clay” for his dominance on the surface. He has won the French Open a record nine times. Rafael Nadal was first introduced to tennis at 3 years old by his uncle, Toni Nadal. Toni has coached Rafael ever since. Rafael is known for his highly aggressive style of play, his spectacular rivalry with contemporary Roger Federer, and his modeling campaigns for fashion companies like Armani and Tommy Hilfiger. Though Nadal also played in the 2004 Olympics, he had to skip the event in 2012 due to tendonitis.

Nadal won gold in Beijing 2008’s men’s singles, his first (and so far only) medal at the Olympics.


He has won a total of 67 men’s singles titles and 14 Grand Slam titles as of February 2016. He has won at least once at each of the four Grand Slam tournaments (a “career Grand Slam”), and did so by age 24.


Achieved a year-end ranking of world no. 1 in 2008, 2010 and 2013. In 2015, ended the year ranked world no. 5 – his worst year since he was a teenager.
