After gaining Olympic experience as a member of the U.S. men’s gymnastics team at the 2012 London Olympics and winning four consecutive all-around titles at the P&G Gymnastics Championships, Sam Mikulak has positioned himself as the American man to beat. And he’s ready to go up against the toughest of international competition: Mikulak says he hopes to be the one to defeat reigning Olympic champion and six-time all-around world champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan. Mikulak wasn’t able to challenge Uchimura at the 2015 World Championships due to a slight Achilles tear that kept him out of competition. Mikulak has joked that his parents, who were both collegiate gymnasts at the University of California, Berkeley, were trying to create “some super baby for gymnastics” when they had him. Mikulak went from attending “Mommy and Me” classes at age 2 to being the first freshman in history to win the NCAA all-around title. At the 2012 Olympics, Mikulak competed on five out of six apparatus in the preliminary round to help his team qualify first to the team final, but the U.S. men faltered in the final to finish fifth. Mikulak and his teammates found some redemption at the 2014 Worlds when they won a bronze in the team competition.
