Biography

Japan’s Sara Takanashi studied piano and ballet as a child before making her first ski jump while she was in second grade. She followed her brother into the sport and her father, a former ski jumper himself, was her coach for the majority of her childhood. Takanashi won a ski jumping gold at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012.

At the 2013 World Championships, Takanashi took silver behind the U.S.’ Sarah Hendrickson, and much was made of what was sure to be a Sara-vs.-Sarah showdown at the Sochi Olympics. Instead, Hendrickson got hurt, taking her out of medal contention. Takanashi ended up with a “dreadfully disappointing” fourth place at the Games, just outside the podium.

At Worlds in 2015, she won a team bronze medal and finished fourth individually. In February 2017, she tied the record for most World Cup wins (53) and is sure to add to the total before the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics kick off. At the 2017 World Championships, Takanashi won two bronze medals, for her individual efforts and the team event.
