Born and raised in Desert Hot Springs, California, Sarah Robles is one of the United States’ top lifters. She finished 2015 as world no. 8 in the super heavyweight (75+kg/165+ lbs) division, making her the highest-ranked American on the International Weightlifting Federation’s list.
In high school, Robles used Olympic weights to improve her track and field performance. She received an athletic scholarship to Arizona State University. Robles started seriously weightlifting in 2008 under the tutelage of Joe Micela. From 2009 through 2012, she took first place at the national championships each year.
A practicing Mormon, Robles competed at the 2012 Olympics. She finished seventh in the super heavyweight category with a 265.0kg (584 lbs) total lift. Shortly after, she tested positive for several steroids during the 2013 Pan American Games. Robles received a two-year suspension, but returned to weightlifting in August 2015.
