Thanks to progressive improvement since his Olympic debut in 2010, Australia's Scotty James has suddenly emerged as a viable threat for Olympic gold and a legitimate rival for Shaun White.

James made his first appearance at the Vancouver Games as a 15-year-old, making him the youngest rider in the men's halfpipe field. Riding with a broken wrist, he placed 21st. But in the following years, he hit a major growth spurt that required him to change his riding habits in order to adapt to the increased height that was affecting his coordination and air awareness.

At the 2014 Olympics, James — now one of the tallest competitors in the sport — competed in both halfpipe (21st again) and slopestyle (16th). Then his career really started to take off.

James hired a new coach and began focusing on boosting his amplitude. In 2015, he won his first world title.

The 2016/17 season was the one that really established a budding rivalry between James and White, as the two battled for wins throughout the winter. James notched victories at several important events: X Games, the Olympic test event in PyeongChang and the world championships (White was in the field for the first two events).

With big airs and a strong bag of tricks, James will be one to watch at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
