After failing to advance out of the heats in all his events at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Russian short track skater Semyon Elistratov redeemed himself at the 2014 Sochi Games by helping his team win relay gold on home ice. He followed up his Olympic victory by winning his first individual world title in 2015, in his signature distance of the 1500m. Before the 2016 World Short Track Championships, it was announced that Elistratov failed a drug test and would be suspended for doping. However, the ban was lifted because he had a small amount of meldonium, which was added to the banned list in 2016, in his system and it may have lingered from a use before the drug was deemed illegal. Elistratov came back with a dominate performance at the 2017 European Championships: in addition to claiming overall gold, he won the European titles in the 1500m and 3000m, a silver medal in the 5000m relay and bronze in the 1000m.
