Biography

With seven Olympic medals already on his resume, the Netherlands’ Sven Kramer could become the most decorated Olympic speed skater of all time if he repeats his Sochi feats and wins three more medals in PyeongChang. One of speed skater’s biggest stars, Kramer made his Olympic debut at the 2006 Torino Olympics and won two medals, a silver in the 5000m and bronze in the team pursuit, at 19 years old. Four years later in Vancouver, Kramer started the Games strongly by claiming the 5000m gold with an Olympic record time. His next race was the 10,000m, the distance in which he had won three straight world championship titles. Kramer posted the fastest time, but was disqualified because his coach at the time instructed him to switch from the outer to inner lane at the wrong time. He called it the worst moment of his career, but continued working with the same coach through the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Kramer finished the Vancouver competition by helping the Dutch men to bronze in the team pursuit.

Kramer’s third Winter Olympics were his most successful yet; he won a medal in all three of the events he raced. He repeated as the Olympic champion in the 5000m, and upgraded his team pursuit medal to gold. However, he didn’t get the satisfaction of finally claiming the 10,000m Olympic title. He finished second behind Jorrit Bergsma, the Netherlands’ other top distance skater. Kramer and Bergsma’s rivalry is still heated—Kramer edged out Bergsma for gold in both the 5000m and 10,000m at the 2017 World Single Distance Championships.
