Speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen was born in the Netherlands but chose to represent Canada, the country of his father’s birth, after failing to make the Dutch team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The former Dutch national champion moved to Canada in 2014 and won his first world championships medal a year later: a silver medal alongside his new countrymen in the team pursuit. In late 2015, Bloemen set a world record in the 10,000m at a World Cup competition in Salt Lake City. His time was nearly five seconds better than the previous world record, set in 2007 by Sven Kramer of the Netherlands. A few months later at the 2016 World Championships, Bloemen finished second behind Kramer in the 10,000m race to win a silver medal. Bloemen also picked up another team pursuit medal, a bronze, in 2016. At the 2017 World Championships, Bloemen finished fourth in his signature distance, the 10,000m. In late 2017, Bloeman once again set a world record in Salt Lake City, this time in the 5,000m. Again, he broke a record previously held by Kramer.
