Vincent Zhou (pronounced “Joe”) had an impressive resume even before having a breakout season in 2016-17. Zhou started skating at age 5 when he was invited to a friend’s birthday party, and soon afterward started taking lessons. He won three consecutive national titles at the intermediate, novice, and junior levels between 2011 and 2013. He then took two seasons off, both due to injury and because he wanted to focus a little more on schoolwork.

In the pre-Olympic season, Zhou starred on the Junior Grand Prix circuit, winning medals at both of his assignments. He won a silver medal at the 2017 U.S. Championships, behind Nathan Chen, and was sent to the world junior championships. He won gold there, becoming the first U.S. junior man to win a world title since 2013.

Zhou opened his Olympic season with a silver medal at a competition in Finland. He finished fourth at his first Grand Prix assignment in China, but plummeted to ninth at his France assignment. He recovered in time for Nationals, where, in his birthplace of San Jose, he captured a bronze medal and landed on the Olympic team.
