Basics

Teams
In handball, each team has seven athletes on the court at one time (six players and a goalie).

Participants
An Olympic handball team's roster comprises 15 players. For each game, each team announces 12 players to be used. The five non-starters can be substituted freely throughout the game; the other three do not wear uniforms and do not sit on the team bench. If a player does not see action during the tournament, s/he will not receive a medal or a certificate.
