Bea's Blog: Lost in translation
Dave and I headed to the pharmacy inside the Main Media Center this morning. I needed some hair spray and some hand lotion and he needed some wipes to remove makeup. Yes, I wrote makeup. Men actually do wear makeup on TV and Dave does too.
So when we went into the pharmacy and looked around, we figured it would be easy to find. We looked and looked but quickly realized that every single item in the pharmacy was labeled in Russian. We found many wipes, but none of them seemed quite right. When we asked the lady working at the pharmacy, we discovered that she did not speak English at all.
Dave quickly motioned with his hands that he needed wipes to clean his face. She had absolutely no idea what he was saying. Then I went over to try to explain it but it didn't make any sense to the poor woman. Finally, Dave opened up his translator app on his smart phone and asked it to translate "to remove makeup."
When the smart phone said those words in Russian, the look on the woman's face was priceless and we both knew exactly what she was thinking … Why does a man need to remove makeup? That's when the woman just disappeared.
We had no idea where she went and continued to try to find a solution. I had suggested he just get baby wipes but we figured at that point, we should just wait for the lady.
The lady returned with a younger woman who could speak English and we asked her if there were wipes to remove makeup. Once the younger woman translated what we were asking for, we learned there was no such thing in this pharmacy.
So after almost 20 minutes spent in the pharmacy, Dave actually ended up buying baby wipes after all!
