The road to the Olympics got a little easier for a Renton-born figure skater after defending gold medalist Evan Lysacek announced on Tuesday he would not compete at the 2014 Sochi Games.Joshua Farris, 18, is the 2013 World Junior Champion and finished fourth at this year’s U.S. championships. He has since made his debut on the senior circuit and finished fifth at Skate Canada.The 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be held January 5-14. It is the last event before the Olympic team is selected.The U.S. has openings for two male figure skaters and three female figure skaters.

Ashley Wagner, who lived briefly in Western Washington as a child and often visits family here, is expected to make the Olympic team.Lysacek announced Tuesday that a torn labrum in his left hip will keep him from attempting to qualify for the Olympic team.
