An essential stop before Vancouver

By Steven Luke

It's where the suburbs meet the hillsides and Olympic dreams meet reality; a place where it's tough to tell summer from winter. Summer from winter athletes, that is.

Bobsledders Mia Jackson and Jazmine Fenlator are preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime shot at the Vancouver Olympics, by pushing around a rusty old cart.

The task is part of a bizarre track workout that looks like something out of supermarket sweep.

"Oh yeah, I get behind a grocery cart and I'm like I wonder how long I can make it to the end of this aisle," said Jackson.

"It's an awkward movement,” said Fenlator. “You're so used to running with your arms and being able to use your entire body and now you have to restrain it and still run fast or faster."

As a couple of former track and field athletes, Mia and Jazmine felt right at home out in Summer Olympics territory. They also took full advantage of the summer-like weather.

"I mean coming from Lake Placid, where the high was zero, some time the high was in the negatives too and right off the plane it was 80 something degrees," said Fenlator.

"With it being bright outside, you're motivated to come outside," said Jackson.

Mia and Jazmine are more then just teammates - they're also great friends. That helps with training and timing.

"We have our helmets on, the shield comes down, it's shake hands, nod the head, and we're ready to go," they both said at almost the same time.

Both women are on track together in the heat of winter. Not a detour but an essential stop on the road to Vancouver.
