In addition to the common heroes, the Olympic Torch Relay also attracts Hollywood actors, professional athletes, and past Olympians. Lance Armstrong even brought his bike.
A Pacifica teenager will be one of 12,000 worldwide running the Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch relay.
Laura Weber, 16, is one of only twenty teens honored by Coca Cola North. The company put out the call for teen nominees who have been, “Champions of positive living in their community.” Her father nominated her earlier this year.
Why Webber?
She is the founder of the “4-H Million Trees project” in 2008. The project's plan is to create an outlet for youth to combat global climate crisis. To date, the green teen’s project has over 25,000 participants in 42 different states and provinces. She's credited for getting over 75,000 new trees planted.
“I was out of town and found out by phone by my Dad. I was ecstatic. At first I couldn’t believe it,” said Webber. Like any normal teen, Webber said the first thing she did was call of her friends.
Webber will make the trek to Calgary in mid-January, where she will run a leg of the Torch relay. Until then, she will continue with her project, one tree at a time.
