Hakkinen was born and raised in Kasilof, Alaska, which is located on the Kenai Peninsula. He grew up with two older brothers, Collin and Jared, along with his parents.
Hakkinen loved hockey as a child. He played hockey for a championship team, but had to quit after his first year of high school due to injury.
In his sophomore year the former hockey player became a skier. In his first year of skiing, Hakkinen won the Junior National Championships.
