A native of Breckenridge, Katie Uhlaender got into the sport of skeleton in 2002 at the age of 18. The daughter of Major League Baseball player Ted Uhlaender, Katie splashed onto the national scene, winning both the National and Junior National Championships in 2003, her first season. She went on to make Team USA for the 2006 Winter Games, placing sixth in Torino. Uhlaender was tough to beat during the 2006-2007 season, winning five gold medals and the overall World Cup crown. She backed that up with another World Cup title the following season, then placed second in the 2008 World Championships. The 2008-2009 season was a difficult one for Uhlaender. She considered skipping events to be with her ailing father, but at his insistence, she competed. Uhlaender learned of her father's death right after winning a silver medal in the final World Cup event of the season.
