Embedded video_content_type: Mikalea Shiffrin could make Olympic history
SOCHI, Russia - Mikalea Shiffrin has a chance to make Olympic history. The 18-year-old from Eagle Vail could become the youngest US skier to win a gold. She'll compete in Giant Slalom and Slalom at the Winter Games in Sochi Russia.
When she's not winning World Cup races, Mikaela is playing guitar and piano or spending time with her family.
Her mom, Eileen says it it hardly seems real to be watching Mikaela realize her Olympic dream this week.
She think back to the baby who came home from Vail Valley hospital on oxygen to help her breathe. It doesn't feel so long ago that Mikaela was an energetic toddler who was learning to ski and who loved to ride scooters with her big brother, Taylor.
"I'm really excited for Mikaela and I am so proud of her." Eileen Shiffrin said. "It is really special for any athlete and their family to have a member of the family representing their country." She and her daughter are accustomed to traveling to World Cup events but Shiffrin says there is something special about the Olympics."It is a really big opportunity. It is your chance to shine for your country."
