Bode rejoins U.S. Team

By Greg Heakes, AFP

LOS ANGELES - Three-time Olympian Bode Miller has announced he is returning to the US ski team after a two-year solo adventure with mixed results.

Miller, who battled injuries at the end of last season and pondered retirement, said he telephoned US ski team coach Sasha Rearick four weeks ago and asked to rejoin the team for the upcoming World Cup ski season.

"I asked what is your programme and how do I look like I can fit into that," said Miller on Thursday. "It didn't take a lot of encouragement when I reached out to Sasha.

"Everyone on he team is on the same page and when you talk about important issues they are dealt with."

The two-time World Cup overall champion is also hoping to qualify for his fourth Winter Olympics which begin in Vancouver in just over four months.

"Nothing compares to the energy and atmosphere that surrounds the Olympics," said Miller, who made the announcement Thursday at Staples Center arena with Rearick at his side. "That's a unique opportunity. You can't get enough of it."

Miller had a disappointing 2006 Olympics in Italy where he attracted more attention for his partying than his skiing. He finished fifth in the downhill and sixth in the giant slalom.

Asked Thursday if he had any regrets, Miller said his actions would speak for themselves.

"As far as I know you can't undo anything," said Miller who won two silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake Games. "Everyone looks back in life and makes judgements.

"I don't feel like this is the arena to apologize for stuff. My actions will speak louder than any apology can.

"Your actions carry more weight. Everyone has to make a decision based on that."

Miller said his first race of the new World Cup season would likely be in Levi, Finland on November 14 and 15. He has no plans to compete in the season opener in Solden, Austria.

Miller won his second overall World Cup title in 2007-08 while skiing independently. He took a four-week break from competition in February and March this year to spend time with his young daughter.

Rearick said they welcome Miller back and hope that this marks a new beginning for the team and the skier.

"To have Bode back is extremely exciting for us," said Rearick, who wasn't the coach when Miller had a falling out with the ski team and decided to strike out on his own at the wheel of his motorhome. "He will be leading through his actions."

He expects Miller to be a leader and mentor to the younger skiers without the distractions of the past.

"I want to keep things positive," Miller said. "It doesn't have to be a regurgitation of the past."

The US team also features two-time women's overall World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn and Olympic gold medal winner Ted Ligety.

In 14 World Cup seasons, Miller has a US-record 31 World Cup victories. He has won four World Championship titles as well.
