NEW YORK (AP) -- Short track speed skater J.R. Celski is confident he'll recover from a deep gash to his leg in time for February's Vancouver Olympics.
Celski, 19, crashed during the U.S. championships Sept. 12, his right skate blade slicing into his left leg near the knee. After surgery, he was on crutches for about six weeks.
At a ceremony on Nov. 4 at Rockefeller Center, celebrating the 100-day countdown to Vancouver, Celski said that he'll resume skating in two weeks. He already had earned enough points at the meet, which determined the 2010 Olympic team, to be nominated to the team when he crashed.
Celski has been working on his rehab with Dr. Eric Heiden, who won five gold medals in long track speed skating at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.
Celski won five medals at this year's world championships and finished second overall. In Vancouver, he qualified to skate in the 1000m, 1500m and 5000m relay, assuming the U.S. earns berths in each.
Only the U.S. curlers have their tickets to Vancouver. Trials, the World Cup seasons, and other factors will influence the remaining decisions. The who, when, and how of determining the 2010 U.S. Olympic team.
With multiple World Cup and Olympic victories under their belts, these athletes have the potential to reach the medal podium in Vancouver.
