SOCHI, Russia — The moment to get back at the leaders of speed skating for ruining her Olympics four years turned into one when Claudia Pechstein only felt the weight of her 41 years.
A hot favorite to at least medal in Sunday's 3000m, the German faltered badly in the final two laps and missed out on a chance to medal at six Games and push her tally into double figures.
After she missed the Vancouver Games because of a hotly contested doping suspension, she had vowed revenge. Instead, she finished 1.79 seconds behind bronze medalist Olga Graf of Russia.
Now, she still has the 5000 to go, the long distance race where she has already won three golds, a silver and bronze. She has said it will be her last Olympic race.
