A day in the life with Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim

What does figure skaters Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim eat throughout a typical training day?

Alexa and Chris Knierim, pairs skaters as well as husband and wife, wake up between 6:40 and 7 a.m. Overall, they spent about four hours on the ice training and two hours off the ice doing additional workouts.

“By staying positive and humble, I am able to achieve my daily goals,” Alexa says. “I keep my goals tangible to remain encouraged by the progress I make.”

For breakfast, Alexa has Stoneyfield yogurt with blueberries and plain Cheerios. Chris sticks to a bagel with cream cheese, or maybe some oatmeal. They both take their coffees in the morning with cream.

From around 8:20 a.m. to 9 a.m., they warm up at the rink. They are on the ice from 9 to 9:45 a.m. From 10-11 a.m. is their lunch break, when Alexa usually has old fashion oats with almond milk and a V8 energy juice. Chris eats either leftovers from the night before or some kind of pasta.

From 11:15 to 12:15, they warm up again for a two-hour on ice training that begins at 2:00 p.m. For snacks, Alexa might have some apple sauce, or string cheese, or a fig bar for a snack throughout the day. Chris likes granola bars, fruits (like oranges) and apple sauce for a snack, too.

They have cross training for between 45 minutes to an hour each day. They do something different every day. Sometimes it’s Pilates, which Alexa says is her favorite because of all the cute outfits that go along with it. Sometimes it’s HIIT strength coaching (high intensity interval training) with Larry, with Alexa says is the hardest for her. “I never enjoy them, but always feel like a beast when I finish.” Another option for cross training is ballet class.

End of each day finishes with recovery, either a physical therapy session or massage. They head home usually around 5 or 6 p.m.

On Sundays, Alexa and Chris choose their dinners for the week and spend time prepping them. Dinners are typically some kind of fish or chicken with vegetables – they use Pinterest to find new recipes. Sometimes they grill and sometimes they use the slow cooker.

If they’re indulging for a special occasion, they might have pizza, cookies, something with chocolate or candy. And Chris says, “Always chips.”

They try to get eight to nine hours of sleep a night. Alexa doesn’t sleep during the day and their bed time is around 10 p.m.
