Dutch cyclist Anna van der Breggen wins gold in women’s road race

Dutch cyclist Anna van der Breggen sped past Team USA's Mara Abbott in the final stretch to take home the gold medal.

Abbott dropped back to finish fourth behind Sweden's Emma Johansson who took home the silver and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini the bronze.

Two of the strongest teams, the Netherlands and the United States, had two riders out front as they reached the top of the Vista Chinesa climb, but then-leader Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten had a horrific crash in the final descent. She was hospitalized, but is in good condition.

Abbott held the lead until approximately 100m left when she was overcome by van der Breggen.

Pre-race favorite Great Britain's Lizzie Armitstead had to stop for mechanical issues early, but worked her way back to finish in fifth place.
