How to watch the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships on NBCOlympics.com

The figure skating championships act as part of a tiered qualification system for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

NBCOlympics.com will stream all the action from the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships in San Jose, California from January 3-7. You can also watch on the NBC Sports App, and events will also either be shown on NBCSN or NBC.

The championships are not an official Olympic Trials event, but do count towards what U.S. Figure Skating Association calls a “body of work.” The Olympic selection committee will take into account the results of nationals, the fall 2017 Grand Prix Final and the series overall, plus additional competitions from the prior season. Based on all of this, the 2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team will be chosen to compete in PyeongChang, South Korea in February.

As the newly-crowned Grand Prix Final champion, Nathan Chen looks to defend his national title in the men’s field in San Jose.

The 2017 national champion in the ladies event, Karen Chen (no relation), will have to hold off three-time national champion Ashley Wagner to retain her title.

Two-time national champions Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani aim for their third consecutive dance win in January. The brother-sister team just captured the bronze medal at the exclusive Grand Prix Final.

The pairs teams in San Jose will be fighting for just one Olympic berth. Married couple Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim won the title in 2016, but missed most of the following season due to Alexa’s abdominal surgeries. They recovered and returned, but not in time for the 2017 Nationals, where Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier took the gold medal.
