Parratto, Young qualify for Rio on 10m platform
Jessica Parratto and Katrina Young qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women’s individual 10m platform by finishing first and second, respectively, at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials on Saturday in Indianapolis. Murphy Bromberg was third with 958.40 points, and Amy Cozad was fourth with 937.25; however, Cozad is already qualified for the Games in the synchronized platform event with Parratto as her partner.
Parratto and Young both make their Olympic debuts in Rio.
Though Parratto kept a steady lead throughout the semifinal and final, Bromberg and Cozad traded second place over the first few rounds, but a missed dive from Bromberg in the third round bumped her into fourth behind Young.
Parratto had the opportunity to clinch after round 4, but with a score of 39.60, she was forced to put her best effort forward in the final round.
Young, on the other hand, surged from fourth place to surpass both Cozad and Bromberg. She makes her first Olympic appearance at the Rio Games at the age of 24. Her grandmother was a bronze medalist at the 1948 Olympics.
Competition concludes Sunday with the women's individual 3m springboard and the men's individual 10m platform.
