McNay, Hughes bronze at European Championships, claim Olympic berth

McNay and Hughes win bronze at the European Championships, earning the men's 470 Olympic spot for Team USA in sailing.

Stu McNay and Dave Hughes have officially won the Olympic selection in the men's 470 sailing class for Team USA.

The final day of competition took place Tuesday at the 2016 470 European Championships. With three top finishes in 12 races, McNay and Hughes earned a bronze medal at the event.

The European Championships held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain was the final of two Olympic qualifying events. The first high-level event was held in San Isidro, Argentina in late February: the 2016 470 World Championships.

"I can confidently say we are a strong contender for a medal in the 470 men's class in Rio."

At the 2012 London Games, Hughes served as a sailing coach for Team USA. After the Games, he could not turn down an opportunity to team up with two-time Olympian Stu McNay. The rest is history, and the pair has been sailing in the 470 ever since.

Although uncontested in the men's 470 class for the Rio Olympic selection, McNay and Hughes both have over a decade of experience racing against the best in the world in the 470. Nonetheless, they didn't achieve notable race results until after they teamed up.

"One of the main differences this time around is that we've medaled at many of the major events [leading up to the Olympics]," McNay told U.S. Sailing. "I can confidently say we are a strong contender for a medal in the 470 men's class in Rio."
