Q&A with Mariah Bell

Mariah Bell tells us who is her most interesting training partner and what language she’s learning to speak

Mariah Bell won a surprise bronze medal at the 2017 U.S. national championships to make her first Worlds team. She finished 12th in her debut.

Do you have any pets?

I have a guinea pig. She is so cute and chubby and her name is Charlie.

What do you remember about the first time you decided to dedicate your life to figure skating?

I remember waking up so early before school to go practice. I was so motivated even at that age to be like the girls I saw on TV!

What’s a misconception about figure skating that you want to clear up?

A flip for us is not the same as a gymnast!

Who is your Olympic role model?

Michelle Kwan and Scott Hamilton

Who’s your greatest influence within your sport?

My boyfriend [French figure skater Romain Ponsart]. He trains with me every day and always pushes and motivates me to be better. Since he skates also he can understand me so well because he is doing the same thing as me every day.

My family, they have always been the best supporters I could have.

But outside of my family, my coach and the training mates (Ashley Wagner, Adam Rippon, Nathan Chen, Romain Ponsart) I am with now have been the most influential. They have made me the most confident and helped me to be the most successful I can be.


Who is your most interesting teammate?

Nathan Chen because is superhuman! He is 17 and the first person in the world to do six quads in a long program.

What are some of your pre-competition rituals?

Spending some time with my family during the day of competition. Facetiming my sister or having her put my make up on if she is at the competition. Listening to music.

Are you superstitious? What do you always have to do?

I always tie my left skate first and always eat a banana while warming up.

What do you consider your breakout moment?

My second Grand Prix event I competed in, Skate America 2016.

Can you speak any other languages?

I am learning to speak French. My boyfriend is French so he is teaching me! I hope to be fluent within the next year or two.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I can ride a unicycle!

What would you be doing if you were not an athlete?

Going to college full time. I am enrolled at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, but since I moved to California I will transfer to a school close and keep take a few classes.

What do you like to do when you have time off?

Sleeping in a little then heading to the beach or going for a nice bike ride along it to relax.

How do you unwind after a competition?

Take a few days off to rest and have a cheat meal… or two!

Do you have any fears on the ice?

To do less than my best, what I am capable of.

Do you have any fears off the ice?

Crabs, mosquitoes and mascots

What are some of your favorite hobbies?

Spending time with my family and friends, going to the beach, shopping.

What are your favorite movies?

Titanic and Just Go With It

What do you like to watch on TV?

The Mindy Project, Key and Peele, and Say Yes to the Dress

What’s your favorite social media platform?

Instagram, I love posting pictures and stories and seeing them from others.
