Olympic outlook: Ranked No. 4 in the world when the Olympic qualifying period concluded at the end of May, Malloy will be seeded in Rio and is expected to contend for a second medal.

Since London: Malloy has collected a number of medals (including a few golds) in various international Grand Prix and Grand Slam events in the last four years. She also earned her first world championships medal (a silver) in 2013 and won a Pan American Games championship in 2015.

How she got started in judo: When she was 6, the Navy base that Malloy grew up on offered a free judo class. She watched her brothers practice at the dojo and thought it looked like fun, but she was considered too small to start participating. Eventually she was allowed to start taking classes, but there weren't any judogis that fit her size, so her mother took a grown man's gi and used a sewing maching to craft a uniform for Malloy.

Why she stuck with judo: "Initially what I loved about judo was hanging out with my friends and throwing them on the floor every day," Malloy said. "That’s how you get kids to be interested in judo in the first place and it’s still true today. … As I got older I started learning about discipline and hard work, and repetition, the things that are important to help your judo get better and I just took to it right away."

First Olympic memory: Malloy recalls watching old VHS videos of the 1996 Olympics, when Jimmy Pedro (now the U.S. coach) won bronze in judo. She knew then that she wanted to be winning medals on that same stage.

If she weren't an athlete: "I would like to be an account manager for a major advertising/marketing company. I am also interested in online advertising and social media and would like to be in charge of managing an online social media presence. I obtained my degrees while competing in judo with the intention of moving into an industry job post-judo."
