Get to know the four-time Olympic medalist

Ski Beginnings 

Born March 9, 1984 in Reno, Nev. She began skiing at age 2 in Squaw Valley, Calif., the site 1960 Winter Olympics. After she won the 2006 Olympic giant slalom gold medal, a ski run at Squaw Valley was renamed “Julia’s Gold.”  

In high school, she played soccer and competed on the track team. She has also completed a triathlon. 

Major Competitions/Medals 

Mancuso has more Olympic medals, four, than any other U.S. woman in Alpine skiing.

She earned her first Olympic medal at the 2006 Torino Games, a gold in giant slalom. She accessorized with a plastic tiara during the medal ceremony. She become the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in Alpine skiing since Picabo Street in 1998.

She claimed two silver medals at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She finished behind fellow American Lindsey Vonn in the downhill. The very next day, she placed second in super combined. 

In Sochi, she was the super combined bronze medalist, giving her an Olympic medal in every color. She became just the third American to win individual medals at three Olympic Winter Games.

Mancuso also has five world championship medals, but no golds. 

Breakout Moment

Prior to the 2002 Winter Games, Mancuso stopped at a gas station in Utah that was selling Olympic pins. Her grandmother bought her one as a good luck charm. It worked, as Mancuso went on to make her Olympic debut in Salt Lake City at age 17. She finished 13th in super combined.  


Mancuso is a big fan of Wonder Woman. She has worn a Wonder Woman costume while surfing, skiing and roller skating, as well as in the hospital recovering from surgery

Off the mountain 

Mancuso spends much of the offseason surfing in Hawaii, building up her core by biking, stand-up paddling and surfing. After the 2014 Olympics, she celebrated her by surfing in the Black Sea: 

She got married on Dec. 29, 2016. She met her husband, Dylan Fish, while on vacation in Fiji, where she was celebrating her 30th birthday. Both are surfers, and Fish is learning to ski.
