Who is Marcel Hirscher?

Get to know six-time world champion Marcel Hirscher

Ski Beginnings

Hirscher was born on March 2, 1989 in Salzburg, Austria. His father, Ferdinand, taught him to ski. He began racing at 15.

Major Competitions/Medals

He has nine world championship medals, including six golds. He also earned the slalom silver medal at the 2014 Olympics.

Breakout Moment

An injury in 2011 put his career in danger.

“It was the first deep cut in my career and it changed a lot in my life,” Hirscher said to the New York Times.

The time away from the slopes confirmed to the Austrian that skiing was what he wanted to do with his life. Once he returned, he enjoyed a breakout season in 2012 and won his first world championship.

Records Held

He became the first male skier to win six overall World Cup titles.

Signature

Hirscher released the song “Best Time” in December 2015. Fellow Austrian Ro Bergmann composed and does the vocals for the song that has over 60,000 views on YouTube.

He enjoys racing speedway motorcycles and CrossFit training.

He has stated that he would like to have a family someday with his longtime girlfriend, Laura Moisl. Currently, the couple has a cocker spaniel named Timon.  

Hirscher has also said that he will retire in 2019, when he is 30, because he feels he will have achieved all he can in racing.
